Broken Dreams and Fences

"Broken Dreams and Fences"

Here on the plains of the Dakotas there’s not many neighbors left nearby,

A few dreams ago, these homesteads spotted the countryside, now ever so sparsely to be found.

Most of the time back then, there was an occasional barbed wired fence between us folks.

Sometimes it got broken and it took a season or two to repair.

Still towering on the plains, are just a few of these towers that mark the day’s gone bye.

The breezes today still cause the rusting blades to churn out its sorrowing sound.

Amongst those broken dreams and fences, of these homesteads are those of our grand folks.

Abandoned in some yester year of despair.

Every winter dad used to walk the fence lines – mending the broken wires.

Surveying the wired lines, climbing the “tower” to oil the rusting gears.

It seemed we were always able to fix and mend all those broken things around the farmstead,

During this season that provided us time to reflect and plan next year’s crop and dreams of a bumper harvest.

My hope is for you this season; is that you rekindle some lost dreams or fires.

Putting aside all of your broken dreams and fears.

Put yesterday’s broken dreams behind and tackle those repairs today before going to bed.

The Dakota Heritage is that same adversity that it took our grand folks to tame this west.

Our dream is still – to make this the season to mend all our broken fences in our field.

Removing whatever stops us from achieving our dreams or causes it to yield.

Most importantly though, before our friendship grows too distant like these decreasing homesteads.

Remember that you this season –are the reason – that can mend all that is broken.
